The cast of the hit comedy series The Inbetweeners have been presented with the outstanding achievement award at the British Comedy Awards.
British comedian Victoria Wood attends the British Comedy Awards in London
Victoria Wood, the veteran comedienne, picked up the best female television comic award while comedian Stewart Lee took home two trophies for best male television comic and best comedy entertainment programme.
The British Comedy Awards ceremony, held at London's Fountain Studios, was hosted by Jonathan Ross and screened live on Channel 4.
Miranda Hart, star of the BBC sitcom that bears her first name, had been nominated for four awards and walked away with one – picking up the best comedy actress title for the second year in a row.
She said she was "shell-shocked" to win and had not prepared anything to say in her acceptance speech.
Hart said instead of partying the night away, she wanted to "get home as quickly as possible, put the kettle on and get in my onesie".The viewers' award for queen or king of comedy went to Sarah Millican, who was not at the ceremony but said in a live link-up that she was "thrilled" to receive it.
The best comedy panel show award went to the recently axed Shooting Stars.
As he collected the trophy, Bob Mortimer said in a sarcastic tone: "Thank you to the BBC."
He was joined by co-host Vic Reeves and other regulars from the surreal show.
Kylie Minogue presented the cast of The Inbetweeners with the British Comedy Academy outstanding achievement award for their success, which included releasing a film this year.
Actor Simon Bird, who stars in the show, said: "It's not really our award – we're just in the show."
His co-star Joe Thomas won twice, as his other show Fresh Meat also picked up the award for best new comedy programme.
Dame Helen Mirren, who had presented Have I Got News For You with a lifetime achievement award, said backstage that she was a huge fan of female comics.
"I think British comedy is in an incredible spot right now," said the actress, wearing a black-and-white star-patterned dress. "There have always been great female comedians but there has been a real rise in modern female comics.
"It is brilliant to see Miranda recognised. I have always been a huge fan of her – and Jo Brand. They are wonderful."
The Business Secretary Vince Cable, who presented the best TV comedy actor award, had a go at a few political jokes.
"He (David Cameron) wanted to stop me from coming on the show but Nick Clegg put his foot down and said 'you're only the Prime Minister, you are only allowed one veto a month'," Mr Cable said.
Darren Boyd, from Smack The Pony, Green Wing and, most recently, for playing John Cleese in Holy Flying Circus, won the best comedy actor award.
Armando Iannucci, creator of The Thick Of It, was presented with the Writers' Guild of Britain Award by comedy actor Steve Coogan.
Coogan said he was "humbled and honoured" to present the award to The Thick Of It creator Armando Iannucci.
He said the Scot, who also devised his Alan Partridge character, had displayed "laser-guided humour" in his career, which began in the 90s.
Iannucci said that he was pleased to be in the spotlight for once, admitting that he usually hid behind someone "more famous" when arriving at awards ceremonies.
Other stars at the event included former EastEnders matriarch Barbara Windsor, boxer Amir Khan, singer KT Tunstall and actor Robbie Coltrane.
When Wood picked up her award, she told the audience: "This is usually a really crummy event, but it's been much better tonight, I think."
Ross did not seem to think the performance had been one of his best, however.
After the ceremony, he took to Twitter to write: "Comedy Awards felt rather too much like hard work tonight.
"But love that Sarah Millican and Fresh Meat and Psychoville got awards!"
Comic Alan Carr replied to his message, writing to Ross: "@wossy you did an amazing job love – audience were a bit too cool for school."
