David Beckham on Stuart Pearce's list for London 2012 Olympics football team selection

British players under consideration for the Olympic football team will receive a letter in the next few days to inform them they are on manager’s Stuart Pearce’s long list for selection.

"I have been in touch with one or two individuals," said Pearce, when asked whether he had contacted Beckham and Giggs directly to ask about their availability."We are about to put a long list of players out who are available and which can be added to."At the moment it is quite a substantial list and those players on it will be acutely aware they are on the radar for the GB team. The players will know very shortly who is on that list, but Beckham is certainly on it."

Those Welsh, Scottish and Northern Irish players who do not want to be selected for the British team because of the opposition of their Football Associations will be able to inform Pearce of their intention after they have received their letter.Pearce also does not know whether he will be able to select players like Jack Wilshere who are likely to be involved in the European Championships with England in June.

He said: "If players are going to the European Championships in the senior team we will have to see nearer the time regarding their form and fitness."
