Curated design shopping club MONOQI launches, raises funding (invites)

Exclusive - Yes, even more Berlin startups with news to share.
MONOQI is today launching an exclusive online shopping platform where select designers can present their wares and buyers can purchase them at reasonable prices.
That sounds a lot like Fab.com, the fast-growing design sales site, which is generating as much as $100.000 in revenue per day and coincidentally just announced that it is working hard on its international expansion.
MONOQI founder and CEO Simon Fabich, who was previously an investment manager at Atlantic Ventures, however asserts that the core concept of his company will differ from Fab and other comparable design shopping clubs. He argues that, especially in terms of user interface, MONOQI is taking a different approach.
Before goods enter the webstore, they are not only hand-picked but also checked for quality by the startup’s design scouts. The shop will partly be organized in so-called “curated spaces”, and not in a typical grid view, according to Simon Fabich.
The ecosystem in which Monoqi evolved consists of some of Berlin’s best known entrepreneurs and investors. Christophe Maire, who has previously invested in startups like SoundCloud and Amen, acts als co-founder and chairman of MONOQI, while a group of angel investors recently invested an undisclosed amount in the startup’s seed round.
Part of MONOQI’s concept is sending design scouts all around the globe, and to feature artists and ‘creative individuals’. Additionally, MONOQI says it aims to create qualitative editorial output in order to be present in the design community – an element that it says will be essential to its success.
