The web was rife with scuttlebutt yesterday that the artistformerly known as Kal-el would make an appearance in an Acer slate next year. In response, Acer's President Jim Wong has confirmed that the company will, indeed, be bringing a quad-core tablet to market in 2012. Unfortunately, Wong failed to mention any other details about Acer's next Android slate, though he did say the company plans to "remain very aggressive" on the tablet front. We're not sure what that means, but we do know we can't wait to see the results of that aggression -- who's up for a quad-core cage match between the unnamed Acer and a Transformer Prime? Acer's no stranger to netbooks: it knows the rules and so does vice president Scott Lin, who has said thata full commitment's what he's thinking of. It comes in the wake of Samsungrunning around and deserting baby-laptops for ultrabooks, but Acer's never gonna say goodbye. Well-off westerners might be obsessed with slates, but emerging markets like China, India and Indonesia prefer the cheaper units. The company's plan is simple -- what it doesn't make in profit on individual units, it'll make back in the sheer volume of units sold. Last quarter Acer sold one point seven million of the things, comfortably ahead of second-placed ASUS and third placed Samsung -- the latter decided it wasn't gonna play the game anymore.
Because phones, like fashion, must always look to the future, Acer's hitching its ride to NFC. The oft-talked about, but still sparsely used tech gets top-billing here as the company refreshes its Liquid line for T-Mobile UK and Orange UK with the Express. It's a solidly mid-range Gingerbread affair, packing an 800MHz Qualcomm 7227 processor, Android 2.3 and 5 megapixel shooter into a 3.5-inch package. Okay, so it's not the best of what's around in wireless, but can you really argue with free (on a two-year contract)? We didn't think so. Follow on past the break for the official presser. Here it is, folks: the inaugural Windows Phone from Acer, known as the Allegro,
is now ready and rearin' to be sold. Not only is it coming to France as
originally expected, it appears that Taiwan has elected to join in the
fun as well. It's no top-notch device, but it doesn't pretend to be
either. Even then, the specs aren't that much of a disappointment: it
comes with a 3.6-inch WVGA (800 x 480) display, 1GHz single-core
Qualcomm MSM8255 CPU, 8GB internal storage, 5MP rear camera with LED
flash and a 1,300mAh battery. We'd like to see a front-facing cam and a
larger juicepack, but it still promises a lengthy nine hours of talk
time regardless. And the no-contract price is definitely tempting, with
it being sold currently in France for €285 ($380); Taiwanese customers
can wander into their local Synnex store on November 30th, likely at a
very similar price point. There's no word on if the Allegro will grace
any other countries with its presence.
