The vast event that is Mobile World Congress (all our coverage will be here) is just shifting into first gear. Although the show doesn’t officially start until tomorrow various announcements are coming out today. The latest is about some new devices from Samsung, which hasn’t been shy and retiring with its huge stand here at the Fira venue. Incidentally, this is where, once, George Orwell paraded with fellow Socialist troops during the Spanish revolutionary fight against the Fascists. Heady days I can tell you, and we’ll be working that metaphor as much as possible. Android versus Apple? You get the drift.
So, Samsung’s latest Android Tablet is going to be the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 to replace it’s first Galaxy Tab (pictured left). We’ve actually beenexpecting this for quite a while, and in our reviews we even wished that the Galaxy Note had just started out as a tablet to begin with. A 7.0-inch variant was announced a week ago (which makes one wonder why people bother with MWC at all if they are going to leak stories ahead of time?). Similar to the 5-inch Samsung Galaxy Note, these devices have a stylus.
The 10.1 has a 1280×800 resolution screen (the 7-inch model has a 1024×600 pixel screen), no OLED screen this time kids, but it has the same a 1 GHz dual-core CPU, 1 GB of RAM, a 3-megapixel camera on the back and a VGA on the front.
Both the 10.1 and the 7 can be 3G models (HSPA) or Wi-Fi-only, and both pack Android – 4.0 or Ice Cream Sandwich. You’ll also get Bluetooth 3.0, USB 2.0, Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Direct, in 8, 16 and 32GB models, upgradable with microSD card up to 32GB (64GB in total). We’re looking at a March release window, though no prices as yet.
Check out Pocket’s lint’s nice hands on.
Samsung also announced the Galaxy Beam smartphone which has a built-in projector which can allegedly beam an image onto a screen of up to 50-inches. Just 12.5mm thick but only runs on Android 2.3.It has 1GHz dual-core processor and 8GB memory.
