LONDON — The parents of an Indian student shot dead in Manchester, northern England, last month spoke of the "senseless act of violence" as they visited the scene of his murder on Friday.
Anuj Bidve's father Subhash and mother Yogini said it had been "an exceedingly difficult journey to make" as they laid flowers at the scene and prayed for their son.
"Anuj was our only son and we cannot comprehend his death," said Mr Bidve.
Anuj, who was studying at Lancaster University, was shot in the head in Salford as he walked into Manchester city centre with Indian friends on December 26.
His parents, from the western Indian city of Pune, earlier retraced his final moments and visited the hotel room where he had stayed, after meeting his friends and tutors on Thursday.
Later Friday they are expected to take their son's body home to India, where his funeral is due to take place on Saturday.
Mr Bidve said he did not blame the people of Salford for his son's death, adding: "The only person we blame is the man responsible for taking Anuj away from us in such a senseless act of violence on Boxing Day morning."
He continued: "When Anuj left India in September last year he was full of hope and ambition for the future. We were all so very proud of him.
"Anuj was our only son and we cannot comprehend this dreadful tragedy.
He said the family had been "deeply moved" by the hundreds of messages they received from people in Salford and Lancaster, especially the Indian community.
"We have been overwhelmed by the reaction and interest of the media both at home in India and here in the United Kingdom," he added.
"We would like to thank the police for the manner in which this investigation has been conducted. We are confident in the British justice system and sincerely hope that this will eventually bring justice for Anuj."
The Bidves visited the Houses of Parliament in London on Thursday, where they were met by lawmaker Keith Vaz, who promised they would receive justice.
Kiaran Stapleton, 20, of Ordsall, who described himself as "Psycho" in court, has been charged with the murder and remanded in custody.
